In Puerto Rico, more than 80% of food is imported, making the archipelago a place with high food insecurity. The situation is aggravated in the case of the island municipality of Vieques, dependent on an unstable and inefficient maritime transportation system for the transfer of food from the big island of Puerto Rico. By the time this food reaches Vieques, it has lost much of its nutritional value and is sold at an average price 30% higher than on the main island of Puerto Rico. This has had a very serious impact on the health and economic income of the Viequenses, who are already suffering from the lack of a hospital in the island municipality.
Projects and initiatives to strengthen food sovereignty in Vieques are of great urgency. Access to agricultural land is indispensable for food security. However, there are more than 2,000 acres of land with agricultural capacity in the hands of the Land Administration and the prices and leasing processes are not accessible to Vieques farmers.
Our goal is to continue implementing initiatives focused on promoting food sovereignty in Vieques. You can help us reach our goal of raising funds for these efforts.
An important part of the work we do at La Colmena Cimarrona is to share our knowledge and experiences with the community. We offer an educational space for schools, universities and community groups. The exchange of knowledge that occurs in each activity inspires us to continue what we do. To request workshops or educational talks at Finca La Semillera, please fill out the form below.
