La Sambumbia germinate markets to strengthen the bond between consumer and producer, especially in communities with little access to healthy food. Providing products at affordable prices so that no one is denied access to healthy food because of their economic situation. Sambumbia is currently developing two marketing initiatives, the community market and the food sovereignty boxes.
What are CSAs? Boxes for Food Sovereignty (CSA) is an initiative of La Sambumbia to promote food sovereignty in Vieques. As a member of La Sambumbia CSA, you directly support producers in Vieques and receive a box full of local agricultural products. We cannot supply boxes for all of Vieques, even if we wanted to, so there are only spaces for about fifteen (15) memberships.
Our CSA program seeks to counteract the food crisis in Vieques by producing food in a healthy and affordable way through community agroecology and beekeeping practices. We intend to eliminate existing inequalities by developing a local solidarity economy that promotes mutual support and equity with the greater goal of developing food sovereignty in the archipelago of Puerto Rico. Likewise, we oppose displacement by creating an economic opportunity for those of us who plant sustainably in Vieques.
Cajas para la Soberanía Alimentaria (CSA) prioritizes the participation of Vieques members. However, it is possible that members outside of Vieques can support this program by sponsoring a membership for a Vieques family that cannot afford it.
¿What is the Community Market?
The Community Market is a collective space where Viequense producers and artisans bring their products to sell. Through this market we intend to increase access to products purchased mainly by Viequenses such as recao, peppers, eggplant, peppers, tomatoes, squash, viandas, plantains, bananas, guineos and also include handmade products made from Vieques crops. In addition to promoting food sovereignty, this space is also a place where solidarity economy is practiced, since one of the agreements establishes that prices are fair for producers and those who buy the products.
The projects created by La Colmena Cimarrona are fiscally sponsored by HASER, Inc., a Puerto Rican non-profit with federal 501(c)(3) and Puerto Rico state (1101.01) tax-exempt status.
